Hostage at the table - by George Kohlrieser | Keynote speaker at JCI European conference 2010

At the European Conference in June 2010 George Kohlrieser was one of the keynote speakers. He shared his knowledge about how to resolve conflicts.

'Conflict is a part of our everyday human behavior that stems from a basic fight–or–flight instinct. Too often, however, we believe that conflict is something that must be avoided at all costs; this tendency to suppress conflict can spark a cascade of negative emotions that eventually derail managers, leaders, and organizations.'

George Kohlrieser is an international leadership professor, consultant, and veteran hostage negotiator. He explains that it is only by openly facing conflict that we can truly progress through the most difficult business challenges. In this provocative book, he reveals how the proven techniques and psychological insights used in hostage negotiation can be applied successfully to any personal or business relationship.

10 ways to build resilience:
1. Make connections. Good relationships are important.
2. Avoid seeing crises as insurmountable problems. You cannot change the fact that stressful events happen but you can change how you interpret and respond to events.
3. Accept that change is part of living. Accepting what cannot be changed helps you focus on what you can influence.
4. Move towards your goals. Develop some realistic goals and tell yourself, “What’s the one thing I know I can accomplish today that helps me move in the direction I want to go?”
5. Take decisive action. Act on adverse situations as much as you can as fast as you can.
6. Look for opportunities for self-discovery. People learn something about themselves and find that they have grown in some respect because of their struggle with losses.
7. Nurture a positive view of yourself. Developing confidence in your ability to solve problems and trusting your instincts helps build resilience.
8. Keep things in perspective. Think about the broader context and keep a long-term perspective.
9. Maintain a hopeful outlook. Focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want, and do not let your mind worry about your fear.
10. Take care of yourself. Pay attention to your own needs and feelings. Engage in activities that you enjoy and find relaxing.
