As young active citizens, we engage in all sorts of activities that create positive impact in our respective communities. In conjunction with the planned projects executed in your local chambers, we also encourage volunteering within your own resident communities to make a difference there. At JCI UK, we believe in rewarding and recognizing our young people that engage in voluntary activities, and that is why we continue the Active Citizen Experience Project otherwise known as ACE. This is where you can log your volunteer hours with us, telling us about your volunteer experience outside of JCI and also encouraging others in the process. Depending on your hours logged, we then honour your commitment by presenting you with a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate of appreciation at the National Launchpad event. A great example is one of our JCI members who has been involved with helping the community residence that were affected by the horrific fire at Grenfell Towers in London earlier this year. It could be anything from spending time at a nursing home with the elderly; sweeping up your community streets; distributing food at your local food bank, and the list goes on. I pride myself in being part of such a selfless organization that is making real change in the communities. So now it's your turn... If you are stuck and don't know where to start, we have an exciting opportunity for you to volunteer with an organisation called Flamingo chicks- An inclusive Ballet School where children with disabilities can dance alongside their friends. The goal is to change attitudes on disability and show people what children CAN do, as all too often disabled children are either excluded or segregated from social activities. In just over three years they have grown to see 2000 children coming through their classes each year as well as having an impact on the global community. In the last year, Flamingo Chicks children have performed and made speeches at high profile events such as at Downing Street and the United Nations in New York.  They have also extended their reach overseas - including to Ghana and refugee camps in Athens. They recently won a Pride of Sport award and here is a short film that summarizes what they do  They are looking for new volunteers particularly for their Yorkshire and London classes and will provide full training– you can see the times and dates for their classes here I personally witnessed first hand, these lovely little angels make a presentation last year at the United Nations headquarters during the Global Partnership Summit and was amazed at the confidence and joy that exuded from them. I fully endorse the great work being conducted by Flamingo Chicks.
